Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is seeking expressions of interest for the demolition of the old Rewa Bridge in Nausori considering public safety and mitigating adverse environmental impact says Chief Executive Officer Kamal Prasad.
“The old bridge has deteriorated and is beyond repair, it has reached a stage which represents a risk to the public and may partially collapse without warning and restoring the bridge would be an expensive and unviable option,” Mr Prasad said.
He said the demolition of the old bridge was expected to happen someday as the structure was deemed as a risk to river traffic and to those accessing Syria Park.
“Demolishing the old bridge is the only viable course of action for the FRA in order to prevent an uncontrolled collapse of the structure.”
Mr Prasad said they will manage the impacts of demolition by incorporating specific measures with the assistance of a specialist contractor to manage the environmental impacts.
The old Rewa Bridge was officially opened on June 12, 1937 and it was closed indefinitely on June 30, 2017.
