The Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Hon. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, officially commissioned the Matuku Island Roads Upgrade Project, marking the completion of upgrades to key roads that improve connectivity between six communities and provide more than 500 households with better access to essential services, schools and economic opportunities.
The upgraded roads connect Yaroi, Lomati, Raviravi, Makadru, Levukaidaku and Qalikarua, strengthening access across the island, where communities have traditionally relied largely on boats for travel.
The Matuku Island Roads Upgrade Project with an approved budget of $3.67 million covers a total road network of 19.53 kilometres, serving seven villages: Natokalau, Yaroi, Lomati, Raviravi, Makadru, Levukaidaku and Qalikarua. Commencing on 24 July 2025, the project has seen $2.05 million expended to date.
During the commissioning, Hon. Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted the importance of reliable road access in supporting the daily needs and livelihoods of maritime communities.
The improved roads will benefit students and teachers travelling to Yaroi Primary School, Delaiverata District School, Qalikarua District School and Matuku Secondary School. Better road access will also make it easier for residents, particularly women and older people, to reach essential services and travel between communities.
The upgrades are expected to support local economic activity, with farming and fishing remaining important sources of income for Matuku residents. Improved access to the jetty will assist farmers in transporting produce and facilitate the movement of goods and services, helping communities connect more easily with markets.
The improved road network may also create opportunities for local transport services and small businesses, supporting employment and socioeconomic development on the island.
Works undertaken included clearing overgrown road sections to improve accessibility and visibility, upgrading drainage and gravelling to improve road conditions and access for communities.
These improvements are also intended to strengthen the roads’ resilience during adverse weather conditions.
These road works reflect the continued focus on improving road connectivity in rural and maritime communities, helping ensure that residents have more reliable access to essential services, education and livelihood opportunities.
