Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is concerned with heavy haulage companies using unsealed roads, when the pavement is saturated by prolonged rain, particularly on Kavanagasau Road, Valley Road and the Nausori Highland Road.

FRA Chief Executive Officer Kamal Prasad says there is a lack of appreciation about the serious effects of this action.

“The recent rain event has saturated and weakened most of the unsealed roads in the Western Division and the FRA contractors are working around the clock to ensure all roads are accessible for emergency services and the public at large,” Mr Prasad said.

In some instances, he said their contractors reinstate the road, however the temporary reinstatements are damaged by heavy haulage companies overnight.

Mr Prasad said that this action by heavy haulage companies is not only affecting the road condition, but it is also disrupting the network flow by making it difficult for private vehicles and other public service vehicles to travel on.

“We need to protect the unsealed road network against misuse and accelerated damage and we are urging the heavy haulage companies to please be considerate of other road users and their safety.”

Meanwhile, the FRA is working closely with the Land Transport Authority and the Road Haulage Association to curb the issue of overloading.
