The Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Hon. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, officially launched the vegetation control initiative on Matuku Island, awarding Divine American Groups Pte Ltd of Lomati Village to undertake routine vegetation maintenance along the island’s roads.
Following the commissioning of the upgraded roads on the island, the initiative will help keep the road network safe, visible and accessible while strengthening community involvement in maintaining rural road infrastructure.
Through the Fiji Roads Authority’s (FRA) Small Works Contracts programme, local communities, particularly those in rural and village settings, are engaged to take a leading role in routine road maintenance. Activities such as vegetation control, minor repairs and general upkeep are carried out by people who use these roads every day.
The initiative provides opportunities for local groups to generate income while contributing to the wellbeing of their communities.
It also strengthens FRA’s capacity to maintain road infrastructure through the support and guidance of its programme managers.
The programme has continued to receive positive feedback from participating communities and stakeholders, who have highlighted its benefits in supporting income generation and community empowerment.
Hon. Ro Filipe Tuisawau encouraged the Matuku community to take pride in their roads and work together to care for the infrastructure, emphasising the importance of protecting the investment for present and future generations.
The initiative reflects the continued focus on strengthening partnerships between Government, FRA and local communities to support sustainable road maintenance, create employment opportunities and build community ownership of rural infrastructure.
