The continuous economic development of Fiji has brought along an increase in transport traffic but despite steady economic improvement, there remains aging infrastructure in Fiji that must be replaced. A significant increase in heavy trucks on Fiji’s road network causes accelerated deterioration of an aging highway and thus places an imposition of restrictions on a number of bridges. The imposition of load restrictions on bridges has caused substantial loss of time and opportunities for businesses. The inadequate capacity of the existing bridges is one of the major factors contributing to the inefficiency of the road network. Transport infrastructure, especially roads and bridges, also suffers from the impacts of disasters and climate change.
The Government of Fiji has received financing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank (WB) for the purpose of the “Critical Bridges Resilience Project”, collectively hereinafter called, the project which will be divided into two packages. The implementation agency for the project is the Fiji Roads Authority. The project will replace four critical bridges along the Queen’s Roads in Viti Levu. The bridges will be constructed to withstand the impacts of climate change and disasters and will improve land transport connectivity, strengthening the resilience of the transport network of Fiji.
