The Fiji Roads Authority confirms that Kalabu bridge on Kalabu Road in Nasinu is closed to motorists from Monday 17 July and will re-open to traffic on Monday 07 August 2017.<\/p>\n

FRA Acting CEO Robert Sen says that the 3 weeks closure period is necessary to undertake the structural repairs to the bridge.\u00a0 He adds that \u00a0the foundation of the bridge is concrete and once this is poured it will take a number of days to cure before any live traffic can be allowed over it.<\/p>\n

Fulton Hogan Hiways together with their sub-contractor Instant Construction Limited will be carrying out this structural repair work that will involve removing and replacing the beams; constructing a new abutment for the bridge; removing and replacing\u00a0\u00a0 the wooden planks and constructing a gabion (rock protection) for the existing walls.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cFRA engineers have identified a large crack on one side of the wing wall in their recent inspection and have confirmed the need to have the structural repair work accelerated\u201d says Mr Sen.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a consequence, motorists and residents in the area will have to make adjustments to their travel route and gain access through Tovata Road. \u00a0The access is restricted from the Kings Road end.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cSignboards were placed onsite this week to advise travellers in the area and my team has been in contact with the bus companies to advise them ahead of the bridge closing for repairs.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Mr Sen says that a temporary pedestrian crossing will be constructed for foot traffic and a bus turning area will also be constructed beside the bridge.<\/p>\n
