Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) confirms that Kinoya Road is closed to traffic at the Kaudamu Junction following the discovery of soil washout beneath the road yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 10 January).<\/p>\n

FRA GM Network Operations and Maintenance Aram Goes says that traffic movement over the surface has to be restricted for now until the maintenance crews have effected repairs.<\/p>\n

\u201cA 900mm diameter stormwater culvert pipe runs beneath the road and it appears the pipes may have separated at a join resulting in the washout of soil between the culvert and the road.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe distance between the culvert and the road is about 2.5 meters and the soil washout has compromised the structural make-up of the road. It is unsafe for vehicles to cross over at the moment for fear of the road caving in due to the size of the cavity that has formed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Goes says that in the interim, motorists are asked to use nearby alternative routes in the area.<\/p>\n

\u201cFRA anticipates to have this road restored by Friday 27 January.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a difficult repair to carry out due to the continuous flow of water through the culvert that is required for upstream property drainage. In addition there are underground water and other utility services that need to be worked around, requiring careful control of the earthworks and reinstatement.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMotorists are advised to use Vesivesi road as an alternative route in the interim.\u201d<\/p>\n
