The Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services, Hon. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, today officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new Korolevu Jetty.<\/p>\n
The $12 million project, supported by the Chinese Government through the Office of the Prime Minister, marks a significant milestone in strengthening maritime transport and improving local connectivity.<\/p>\n
Located in Korolevu Village, the new jetty will include two dedicated passenger and cargo berths designed to accommodate small motorboats, significantly improving accessibility for villagers, fishermen, and local businesses.<\/p>\n
The jetty structure will span 25 metres, and works will include upgrades to the existing sloping revetment on the west bank of the flood discharge estuary.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, while representing the Hon. Prime Minister, Hon. Tuisawau said the Korolevu Jetty aligns closely with the priorities outlined in the national development agenda.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnder the Fiji National Development Plan 2025\u20132029, the Government has emphasized the urgent need for balanced development across rural, maritime, and urban areas; bridging gaps in infrastructure, access, and opportunity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs part of the renewed focus on rural and outer-island transformation, the Plan calls for improved connectivity through better roads and jetties, alongside greater investment in transport, water, sanitation, and other essential infrastructure,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The opening of this jetty also reflects our broader commitment to rural infrastructure development; a commitment that has seen significant investment in roads, footpaths, bridges, and community services to enhance access and improve living standards for rural Fijians,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n
Representing the Ambassador of China to Fiji at the event, the First Secretary, Mr. Liu Ke, highlighted the strategic importance of the project, noting it as a key piece of infrastructure and reaffirming China\u2019s commitment to working with the Fiji Roads Authority to ensure its successful completion.<\/p>\n
He also underscored the strong ties between Fiji and China particularly under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), noting that the long-standing relationship continues to support progress in infrastructure and community development.<\/p>\n
The Korolevu Jetty project demonstrates the Government\u2019s continued commitment to improving rural maritime infrastructure and supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities that rely on small marine vessels for trade, transport, and daily movement.<\/p>\n
