Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) confirms the temporary closure of Wainaloka Bridge to effect emergency repairs against this morning’s failure. The cause of the failure is yet to be determined and an investigation is currently underway.
FRA Chief Executive Officer, John Hutchinson says that intermittent closures are necessary as FRA’s contractor is working to a deadline to have the bridge re-opened before the next boat arrives from mainland this evening.
Mr Hutchinson says that the bridge is located on Ovalau’s circular road between the Buresala Jetty and Levuka Town.
“Fiji Roads Authority is advising motorists on Ovalau that there will be road closures throughout the day and to expect some form of bridge restriction in the afternoon.”
“The inconvenience is regretted, and our team is working hard to have Wainaloka Bridge opened.”
Mr Hutchinson also stated that FRA bridge engineers will inspect the bridge to assess the damages and is requesting the co-operation of the community in obeying the traffic management set up and the instructions from the traffic controllers on the ground.
“The FRA also takes this opportunity to advise the wider community that 3 other bridges on the island are currently being replaced and construction work has already started. These bridges are the Vuma Bridge, Naisoqo Bridge and Market Bridge.”
