Fiji Roads Authority’s (FRA) Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Moore is pleased to inform that the Vuma Box, Naisogo and Levuka Market Bridges on Ovalau Circular Road are now complete and open to public.
“The concrete bridge structure has now replaced the previous Vuma Box and Naisogo Bridge, which will improve access and bring great relief to the community, especially to school children and farmers,” Mr Moore said.
He said the Vuma and Naisogo Bridges have been transformed from a single-lane bridge to a standard structure with increased structural capacity. The bridges support a single-lane traffic as well as a pedestrian footpath with safety barriers both for vehicles and the public.
“The FRA is committed to protect and maintain Levuka- the UNESCO World Heritage Site, hence the construction of new road infrastructure is vital. The three bridges will benefit close to 9000 people.”
Mr Moore said the Levuka Market Bridge is considered to be a heritage site and it was constructed to replicate the old bridge; a dual lane bridge with a single pedestrian walkway.
“The Market Bridge is located on Beach Street, within Levuka Township and the bridge is on the main entry/exit route to the town of Levuka.”
He has thanked the people of Levuka for their patience and support during the construction period.
This project is part of the Design and Construction of Six Short Bridges programme – Vuma Box, Naisogo Bridge, Levuka Market Bridge, Savu 4 Bridge in Naitasiri, Wainasusu Bridge in Navua and the Naganivatu Bridge in Rewa.
